The 2022 has been declared the Year of Mountain Ecosystems Protection and Climate Resilience in Kyrgyzstan. The President Sadyr Japarov signed a relevant decree. The press service of the President reported.
The order was signed in order to improve climate resilience, preserve the natural heritage and hold the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development.
On the initiative of the Kyrgyz Republic on December 16 last year, participants of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution proclaiming 2022 as the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development.
The issues of promotion of a number of other initiatives of the Kyrgyz Republic, voiced by the head of state in his messages at the UN General Assembly in New York and the summit of leaders on climate in the city of Glasgow, are being worked out.
The commitments of the Kyrgyz Republic in 2021 were presented in the form of the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), which are the plan to combat the effects of climate change and the country’s contribution to global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Kyrgyzstan has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions; by 2030, the country is committed to reducing emissions by 15.97 percent according to «business-as-usual» scenario and by 43.62 percent with international support.
In addition, one of the priority areas of the Cabinet of Ministers’ action plan for the implementation of the National Development Program until 2026 is climate resilience and economic development in accordance with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
According to the presidential decree, the Cabinet of Ministers was instructed to develop and approve a roadmap for the Year of Protection of Mountain Ecosystems and Climate Resilience by March 1.
It considers the implementation of environmental and climate measures and projects in agriculture, energy, industry, as well as projects for the development of forestry, ecotourism, emergency response, events at the international level, scientific and practical conferences.
