The Canadian authorities have imposed sanctions against 27 Russian financial institutions in connection with the start of a military operation in Ukraine. RBK reports.

The restrictions were imposed on Gazprom, Russian Railways, Gazpromneft, Transneft, Alros, the United Aircraft Corporation, and Tactical Missiles Weapons Corporation.

The list also includes Sberbank, VTB, Gazprombank, Alfa Bank, Roseximbank, Otkritie, Sovcombank, Genbank and others.

«The new changes impose restrictions on 31 individuals who are key members of President Vladimir Putin’s inner circle, his close associates and family members of some individuals already subject to Canadian sanctions, as well as 27 key financial institutions,» the document says.

Earlier it was reported that the United States would impose new sanctions and export restrictions against Russia to minimize its impact on Europe. The sanctions will be imposed on banks with assets exceeding $1 trillion. Imports of high-tech products will be restricted by 50 percent. The new U.S. sanctions will affect Russia’s largest state-owned companies and will be comparable in importance to cutting Russia off from SWIFT.

On the night of February 24, Vladimir Putin officially announced start of a military special operation in Donbas.

An extraordinary meeting of Russia’s Security Council was held in Moscow on February 21 to discuss the issue of recognizing the independence of the DPR and LPR. Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the decree.
