Atlas of Environmental Changes in Kyrgyzstan has been published under the supervision of scientists from Moscow State University (MSU) and the Institute of Geography of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The press service of the Geography Department of Moscow State University reported.
The atlas consists of a collection of maps and texts illustrating and analyzing environmental changes in the Kyrgyz Republic over the past decades. It includes detailed information on the causes of climate and demographic changes, as well as the state of water, land, forest resources, problems of biodiversity protection and prevention of natural disasters. It also reflects progress in achieving the goals of the three Rio Conventions, as well as Sustainable Development Goals 6 and 15.It is noted that the atlas will be available in electronic form to specialists from relevant departments of the country. To ensure access, a geoportal was created on the basis of the Institute of Geography of the Russian Academy of Sciences, which will allow for constant updating of information in accordance with the national priorities.
«Publication of the atlas is an important event, since this is the first comprehensive cartographic work in the Kyrgyz Republic for the entire post-Soviet period. The dissemination of the atlas will be facilitated by its publication in English, Russian and Kyrgyz. In the first days, more than a million users visited the UNEP website, which has the electronic Russian-language version of the atlas, which demonstrates interest in this type of product in the world,» the statement says.
The project was implemented with the financial support of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
According to the authors, the target countries of the project, in addition to Kyrgyzstan, are also Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. The atlases of these countries will be published in Russian, English and national languages in the coming months.
