Nine schoolchildren from Russia, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan became winners of the first Open International Biology Olympiad in Sirius. Representatives of Kazakhstan Ersultan Kairken and Batyr Erzhanuly, a schoolboy from Kyrgyzstan Dmitry Ruban, as well as Russians Ivan Polyakov, Darya Garshina, Zakhar Degterenko, Alikhan Zhangaziev and Vera Krasnoperova won gold medals.

Sirius held the Open International Biology Olympiad for the first time. The competition was attended by 70 schoolchildren from 14 countries. The participants had to pass three competition rounds: theoretical, practical and team project rounds.

The Sirius Educational Center, where the best schoolchildren from all over the country, as well as their teachers and mentors, are trained all year round, has been established after the XXII Winter Olympic Games. President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin proposed creating a center based on the Olympic infrastructure to select and provide advanced training for gifted children in the fields of natural sciences, arts, and sports.
