Senior citizens make up 5.7 percent of population in Kyrgyzstan

There are more than 407,800 people aged 65 and over in Kyrgyzstan, which is 5.7 percent of the total population. The Ministry of Labor, Social Security and Migration provided such data.

According to it, a Memorandum of Cooperation was signed between the ministry and the public association Union of Pensioners of Kyrgyzstan.

At the meeting, Minister of Labor Ravshanbek Sabirov said that, at the request of the Union of Pensioners, the Ministry of Labor has already included in its plans the construction of a gerontological center, which will become an important element in the system of comprehensive support for senior citizens.

In addition, the minister proposed considering the possibility of creating a Council on Pensioners’ Issues or amending the current regulation on the Council on Disabled People’s Affairs in order to transform it into a Council on Disabled People and Pensioners.

During the meeting, representatives of the Union of Pensioners voiced current problematic issues faced by older people, including the need to expand benefits for pensioners, as well as issues related to the allocation of a resort for the elderly.
