Afghanistan could be included in Central Asia–UN security system – Otunbayeva

Afghanistan could be included in Central Asia—UN security system. Roza Otunbayeva, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and Head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), announced during the Termez Dialogue on Connectivity between Central and South Asia «Building a Common Space of Peace, Friendship, and Prosperity.»

«The issue of security — without resolving it, no investments or projects can take root. Afghanistan could be included in the system of collective security of the countries of the region,» Roza Otunbayeva said.

According to her, regional security cannot be ensured without cooperation between Afghan security forces and their counterparts in neighboring countries.

Otunbayeva pointed out that although an anti-terrorism group exists, its members have never met — a step that is essential for effective counterterrorism efforts.

According to experts, security challenges, both in the region and within Afghanistan itself, cast serious doubt on the viability of proposed projects aimed at establishing transport corridors through Afghanistan to India’s seaports.
